What is Leadership?
Leadership is a license to drive others to their destination. You’re entrusted with a vehicle — a department, a business, a group — and you’re responsible for the direction, the decisions, and the successful arrival of your passengers i.e., your staff, employees, etc. Leadership is also about teaching and impartations. Eventually, you want your team to be able to drive to the destination themselves and to get there faster than you ever could and in more innovative ways. Leadership involves a delicate dynamic of relationships, decision-making and accountability. By the way, if you have no one following you, you are not a leader — you’re just a boss. This puts a key emphasis on relationships and building trust with those you are leading so that they will in turn trust your leadership and vision.
What is Executive Coaching?
You’ve done the leg work of climbing the ranks to get to this position as an executive and leader in your company. An executive coach helps you maximize your leadership potential within this hard-earned position. Through tailored and personalized training, executive coaching takes talent development to the next level. Executive coaching provides support in a variety of ways from results-oriented skill building exercises to one-on-one mentorship. Executive coaching is a process of root cause analysis, identifying areas of improvements and strengths, and building a roadmap to achieving sustainable leadership goals. With an executive coach, you are more likely to accelerate in your leadership abilities specific to your position as an executive, which will lead to a more efficient, motivated team.
What is Leadership Coaching?
Leadership coaching is a bit different from executive coaching but they both follow similar principles. Leadership coaching is essentially an opportunity to develop leadership potential in individuals, irrespective of their profession. Leadership coaching takes on a more holistic approach than executive coaching because it doesn’t have to necessarily focus on a corporate definition of leadership. Nor is it mandatory to have specific goals or objectives for professional gain. A teacher, a freelancer, a standard employee etc., can utilize leadership coaching to optimize both their personal and professional development. A leadership coach can take the interpersonal and intrapersonal goals of an individual and create a tailored plan that is centered around those needs. Ultimately, the overall purpose of a leadership coach is to make the client a more effective and established leader.
What are the characteristics of leadership?
There is an endless array of adjectives and professional jargon that can be applied to answer this question. Experts have defined, studied, researched, and revised the term “leadership.” But in the end, these 20 core values of leadership have stood the test of time.
- Emotional Intelligence
- Wisdom
- GRIT
- Purpose-Driven
- Authenticity
- Confidence
- Decision-Making
- Problem Solving
- Developing Others
- Results-Oriented
- Inspirational
- Innovative
- Communication
- Mindfulness
- Understanding
- Integrity
- Courageous
- Passionate
- Trustworthy
- Resilience
What Makes For An Effective Leadership Coach?
Experience, dedication and passion to see the client thrive. Without these three key traits, a leadership coach is simply just a paid accountability partner. What distinguishes the effectiveness of a leadership coach is their ability to not just teach, but their ability to guide and equip the client with sustainable practices, tools, and methods. The effective leadership coach is trustworthy, approachable, client focused, full of integrity and results-oriented. There are practical knowledge bases that your coach should have including but not limited to: business acumen, principles in psychology, emotional intelligence, and (of course) fundamental coaching skills with a minimum of 10,000 hours of applied expertise.
Why Hire an Executive Coach?
With the vast amount of coaching videos, self-help books, and free online resources, we understand that it may seem counterintuitive to spend money on an executive coach. So then, why should you hire an executive coach? The answer is actually quite simple: results. And not just any results. We’re talking about “personalized time-saving, business-growing, performance-improving, employee motivating, confidence-boosting” results. Hiring an executive coach is an investment that will reap benefits that are not just seasonal but will last the entire lifespan of your career. Between the competitive advantages and unparalleled ROI, you might want to ask yourself, “Why shouldn’t I hire an executive coach?”
Advantages of An External Coach
There’s a reason why consultants and auditors are sourced externally. Specialized objectivity can be leveraged to provide holistic, unbiased outcomes. Bringing in an outside perspective removes any conflict of interest — other than the shared sentiment of seeing you and your team thrive — which results in a focused and controlled talent development process. An external executive coach can dig deep into those conversations that are necessary to your growth as a leader. Conversations about your employees, the culture, professional and personal challenges. A professional relationship centered around trust can help develop an environment of confidentiality which might otherwise be compromised with internal resources. Aside from the objective benefits, an external coach brings in a host of targeted coaching experience, business acumen, and solutions-oriented tools and techniques. Their focus is on your leadership, your development, and achieving your goals and objectives. They aren’t bound by the limitations of being involved in other duties as part of your organization. The combination of accountability, targeted focus, and flexibility makes an external coach the optimal way to go for executive coaching.

Unleashing the Potential of Individuals, Teams, and Organizations
Executive coaching is only successful when it’s built on a foundation of trust and focused on results. Moxie Institute’s coaching approach is based on gaining commitment from the executive and their stakeholders, improving their skills and measuring the results. With Moxie Institute’s executive coaching services, you’ll begin a curated process that begins and ends with your maximum leadership potential in mind. Our master coaches create your roadmap through a series of discovery sessions and evaluations and we facilitate and guide your process through these proven steps:
Selection
A leader is selected by the executive team or voluntarily opts-in to receive coaching services.
Objectives
The individual will work with the coach to define the desired outcomes and objectives for the coaching relationship.
Data Collection
Through a series of assessments, the leader’s leadership style and competencies are evaluated to determine the best approach for the coaching process. The coach provides qualitative feedback to help the leader understand their competencies and areas of growth.
Goal Setting
After the assessments and evaluations, the leader and the coach come together to finalize the established goals with a better understanding of their assets and needs.
Coaching Sessions
The targeted coaching sessions are a continuous process of practical leadership development, guidance, and real-time support and feedback.
Evaluation
As the sessions come to a close, the executive coach and the leader evaluate their progress, discuss their successes and create an exit strategy for sustainable results.
Completion
An official summary outlining the process and results is prepared for the leader (and the leadership board, if requested).
Follow-Up
For an outlined period of time, the coach and leader will engage in follow up communications to assess the application of the coaching sessions.
The value and impact of the executive coaching experience can be measured in a very quick time frame.
Executive Coaching & Leadership Coaching Options
The coaching cadence is situational, however, our decades of experience point to weekly or bi-monthly sessions for the best short-term results. Weekly sessions help keep the coach and executive on track and serves as an “accountability” touchpoint for measurable improvement.
Developmental Coaching (10 – 20 hours)
Three to Five months: The focus of the sessions are to identify and prioritize developmental goals and establish an ongoing learning journey. This is accomplished in partnership with the professional along with the supervisor and/or stakeholders. The goal is to quickly transition to client independence with the supervisor and stakeholder support for continued progress.
Executive Coaching (30 – 60 hours)
Six months up to one year: The focus is to identify and prioritize individual and developmental goals, challenges, team effectiveness and organizational goals with an action plan. The coach will gather data via a client questionnaire, a 360 degree feedback process, and other diagnostic assessments such as Myers-Briggs, Strengthsfinder, Hogan Leadership, Leadership Gap Indicator, etc. The coach is responsible for working with the executive to determine the plan, its implementation, execution and measure ongoing results.
Team Coaching (30 – 60 hours)
Six months up to one year: Executive team coaching is ideal for improving team dynamics and creating sustainable change. Expected outcomes include increased team cohesiveness; surfacing of difficult, but imperative conversations; elevated authentic, transparent communication; resolving of personality and work-style differences. Moxie Institute coaches are skilled at illuminating hidden and undermining, but ever-present, issues to the table, and expertly addressing them in a safe and partner-centric way to elevate the team’s emotional intelligence and effectiveness. We facilitate dynamic group sessions that allow participants to powerfully integrate new awareness tools, and structured accountability, resulting in greater: communication, authenticity, teamwork, and productivity.

Assessment Tools
Executive coaching is most effective when it’s personalized to address the unique set of strengths and development needs of each executive. Moxie Institute draws upon many executive and C-suite level assessments that guide our coaches to pinpoint their approach to the specific needs of each executive. In addition, our 360-assessments are designed to create involvement and buy-in from other key leaders and stakeholders to target discussions, illuminate blindspots and identify areas of strength, challenges and opportunities.
Who Will Benefit
C-Suite Executives
Energize and sharpen senior leader performance. At a time when senior executives face the toughest challenges of their careers, they have fewer trusted peers, mentors, and colleagues who will give them objective guidance, challenge their thinking, or help them to grow. Simultaneously, their position of influence makes it harder to admit their struggles to others within their organization. We align these executives with a Moxie coach that matches their position and business acumen.
Executive Education
Transitioning from a functional or business unit leader to an enterprise leader is no easy feat. Executives are responsible for driving the success of the business, and they require the proper business acumen and leadership skills to make it happen. We provide the development and coaching your executives need for success.
High-Potential Development
High-potential leaders face the highest expectations and are often tasked with the most challenging assignments, and the need to build effective teams quickly. We help high-potential leaders with advanced business acumen and leadership capabilities, assessing for potential while preparing leaders for bigger, broader, and more senior roles.
Middle Manager Development
Shifting from leading others to being the manager of managers is one of the greatest challenges rising leaders face. We provide mid-level leaders with the tools and skills they need to successfully manage multiple teams, maintain accountability for large budgets, build credibility, develop talent, and effectively communicate strategy from the top down and throughout the organization.
Front-Line leader Development
Front-line leaders, along with their direct reports, make up the group with the largest opportunity to impact the business where it really counts. Directly or indirectly, front-line leaders touch every single customer, and we equip your leaders with the leadership and business skills they need to drive success.
New Hires and Onboarding
Successful onboarding leads to accelerated productivity, improved retention, deeper bench strength, higher employee satisfaction, and engaged employees who execute on the organization’s strategic objectives and deliver results. We help you to create structured onboarding processes to select and make the most of your new hires through the proper assessment and training.

- “I am so thankful for your help. I have received so many compliments on my speech, it felt unbelievable! This would not be possible without your amazing coaching! One of my mentors actually tweeted my presentation! What a huge compliment! Because of you, I now look at speeches in completely new ways. I look for ideas. I search for what perception has been changed after the speech. I notice the storytelling techniques. I even watch great speeches being delivered and, most times, I wish the speakers could have taken your course! This has been one of the best courses I have taken. I look forward to collaborating with you again. Working with you has been a transformative experience.”Amy Yang, General Manager at Coca Cola
- “I highly recommend Fia Fasbinder and the work she does. The City re-introduced management academies so as to better prepare tomorrow’s leaders of our organization and Fia’s skills are part of our program. Without question, her assistance on presentation skills is a MUST HAVE.”Scott Chadwick, Chief Operating Officer at City of San Diego
- “Senior level network engineers and their leaders had a blast during Fia’s Presentation Skills Workshop. They practiced things often forgotten in the age of presentations driven by PowerPoint. They learned the art of preparation and relaxation, vocalizing from the diaphragm, and effective articulation. They learned and laughed at the same time. I too was preparing for a public speech in front of a large audience, and Fia’s workshop was most timely. I utilized all the skills practiced during the presentation and knocked it out of the park!”Carol Stone, Sr. Leadership Development Consultant at T-Mobile
- “Fia is an outstanding speaker coach. She worked with me on my recent TEDx talk, and I learned a huge amount. I have given hundreds of presentations in both academic and business venues, and was surprised at how much more there was to learn. She gave me a new understanding of how to engage the audience even more. Fia is also a joy to work with. She is friendly and supportive, and always put me right at ease. I can’t say enough.”Marian Bartlett, Research Scientist at Apple
- “The speech went fantastic! Deloitte was happy, and I had several people come talk to me afterward about how much they connected to it. I truly appreciate all of your creativity and quick thinking. It was a pleasure to work with you all!”Gretchen Bladek, Google Fiber, Curriculum
- “Moxie, you’re amazing and we are so thankful for your team’s time and talent helping us prepare. Our speakers are so prepared, poised and polished for our conference…and we are so thankful. In fact, our CMO’s sessions are so AMAZING that his sessions are literally overflowing with people sitting in the aisle! Thanks to your coaching. We can’t thank you enough!”Elyssa Lamoureux Vice President Advisor Experience, Cetera Financial Group, Inc.
